The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks a Motor Equipment Operator to operate commercial vehicles and light motorized equipment in a variety of solid waste activities.

DPWES provides award-winning solid waste collection services for approximately 45,000 homes, operates a transfer station and landfill, regulates solid waste services, and leads sustainability initiatives to advance Fairfax County's zero-waste goals. DPWES Solid Waste is a diverse workforce of approximately 300 merit and 50 non-merit employees, with an annual operating budget of more than $100M. Our nationally recognized team of professionals is working together toward a singular goal: providing environmentally responsible and cost-effective management of municipal solid waste, keeping Fairfax County safe, green, healthy, and clean.
Safely operates commercial vehicles and light motorized equipment in a variety of solid waste activities and complies with applicable Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations. The position requires the incumbent to operate a motor vehicle to and from construction sites, off-site meetings, training, and conferences. Position is designated as Emergency Service Personnel. An employee in this position must fulfill emergency service duties and comply with Solid Waste and DPWES safety programs and guidelines.
Note: Holiday, weekend, and overtime work may be required. Position is designated as "essential emergency services personnel".
*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Motor Equipment Operator position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at the time of application submission to be eligible.
Illustrative Duties

- Drives a refuse collection truck, overseeing crew members, checking the car for proper operating condition, and making minor repairs;
- Performs maintenance on medium/small equipment and vehicles (such as checking and adding fuel, water, oil, and air; checking the brakes and cleaning vehicles);
- May perform a variety of laborer tasks, such as digging, loading, snow shoveling, grass cutting, brush removal, asphalt leveling and raking, lifting, pushing, and other physical work;
- Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are followed when working near equipment;
- May lead a small crew of laborers;
- Effectively communicates with employees, supervisors, and customers;
- Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
- Reports unsafe working conditions;
- Complies with safety competencies.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Working knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations;
- Working knowledge of general maintenance of light motorized equipment;
- Working knowledge of computers:
- Skill in the operation of gasoline-powered construction, maintenance, or refuse collection equipment;
- Ability to perform light maintenance on this equipment;
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions;
- Ability to read and comprehend maps;
- Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions;
- Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;
- Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees, and supervisors;
- Ability to comprehend and comply with safety practices;
- Ability to lead the work of others.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, and two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Valid driver's license.
- Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B".
- DOT Medical Card.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, an alcohol/drug test, a driving record check, and acommercial driver's license screening to the satisfaction of the employer.
- Required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year of experience operating Solid Waste equipment.
- One year of experience operating construction-type equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to effectively communicate, both written and orally, and utilize communications equipment. Ability to effectively use online training tools and communication mediums. Ability to handle strenuous activities and repetitive motions. Ability to lift to 25 lbs. without assistance and 25 to 50 lbs. with or without assistance. Ability to operate light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles. Ability to perform strenuous activities and repetitive motions. Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, bend, crouch, stoop, reach, and lift and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for lengthy periods of time. Ability to work around and be exposed to Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and temperatures. Manual strength and dexterity are required to manage equipment and materials—all duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include an exercise.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL and are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have a CDL at the time of hire.
