Summary:
Responsible for the safe operation of a school bus and for ensuring the safety of student passengers and patrons while meeting established bus schedules. Transportation routes include to and from schools’ sites, activity trips, and other special events following federal, state, municipal, and district regulation policies and laws. Other duties include performing daily vehicle inspections and enforcing school bus safety rules. Drivers will be
required to work with Transportation Paraeducators as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Safely operate a vehicle to transport students and patrons to and from school, special events, and activity trips during weekdays, weekends, evenings, and extended days or weekly hours per federal, state, municipal, and District regulations and procedures. Read route directions and maps as needed. Maintain student control and safety of all vehicle passengers and issue written discipline reports as required. Monitor passengers for medical or behavioral problems, administer First Aid, and issue written reports as required. Aid in loading and unloading of passengers via the stairs or lift mechanisms, including securing wheelchairs, mobility aids, oxygen bottles, safety vests or other restraining devices, seat belts, Child Safety Restraint Systems (CDRS), band and athletic equipment or luggage as dictated by route assignment and need. Complete student checks by using electronic equipment.
Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the assigned vehicle using electronic inspection equipment, including examining the engine compartment, testing brakes, and inspecting the bus's chassis (underneath the bus), interior, and exterior. Report damage and malfunctions as required by District policies and procedures. Fuel, service, clean, and stock district vehicles per District, state, and federal regulations and guidelines.
Follow route directions, coordinate and maintain accurate descriptions of student stop locations and times with Departmental Schedulers. Update Special Needs emergency procedures as needed,
Communicate with the Scheduler/Dispatcher, other District departments, parents, students, and schools in person via two-way radio, telephone, and E-mail to accommodate any route changes, student issues, and special requests.
Report and document all accidents, incidents, behavior problems, and issues dictated by District policies and procedures.
Attend training classes as required by route assignment, District, state, and federal regulations and policies.
Train students, patrons, and designated staff on proper emergency actions in case of bus emergency.
Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
High school diploma or equivalent. Specialized courses or
Successful self-study in commercial driving is necessary to obtain a BP2S commercial driver's license (CDL) permit, including required
written tests before hire. Must complete additional courses and
driving test within three weeks after hire to obtain a valid BP2S
CDL.
EXPERIENCE: Three consecutive years of experience operating a motor vehicle is required. Bus driving experience is preferred.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT & OTHER:
Basic ability to read and write, essential mathematical functions, and basic computer skills. Ability to tell time and work with children
with various backgrounds and abilities. Operating knowledge of
and experience with operating motor vehicles. Operating
knowledge of school buses, school bus emergency equipment,
knowledge of the use of safety vests and other adaptive restraint
systems, wheelchair lifts, and tie-downs required upon
completing District training.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
Commercial driver's license (CDL) permit, completion of First Aid
certification as determined by the Colorado Department of
Education within 90 days after hire. Must complete additional
CDL courses and driving test within three weeks after hire to
obtain a valid BP2S CDL. Employees will be required to drive one
or more District vehicles. Employees must maintain a driving
record that meets the standards of the District insurance policy.
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:
This job has no formal supervisory responsibilities; however, this
position does supervise the safety, behavior, and well-being of
students and patrons while en route. Acts as a technical resource
and mentor for new drivers, including training, demonstrating,
and answering questions.
SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS:
High exposure to self and others to repetitive motion injuries
due to operating a vehicle. Medium exposure to bruises and
fractured bones due to falling or bumping into objects; cuts
due to sharp objects, and to hernia due to lifting students or
equipment. Low exposure to self to cuts, bruises, fractured
bones, chemical and heat burns, loss of sight, loss of limb,
disfigurement or fatality due to vehicle accidents; to chemical
burns due to working with chemicals and diesel fuel; to heat
burns due to a hot engine or exhaust pipe and to disease due to
handling bodily fluids. A person in this position may also expose
others to cuts, bruises, fractured bones, chemical and heat
burns, loss of sight, loss of limb, disfigurement, or fatality due to
vehicle accidents; to chemical burns due to improperly handling
chemicals and diesel fuel; and to disease due to improperly
handling or disposing of bodily fluids.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly
required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with
hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is
required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and
smell. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical
parts and high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally
required to stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift
and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required
by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly
exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne
particles, outdoor weather conditions, and vibration. The
employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid
conditions and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the
work environment is usually very loud.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly
required to communicate, use interpersonal skills, and negotiate.
The employee must frequently compare, analyze,
evaluate, and compile. The employee is occasionally required to
coordinate, copy, instruct, compute, and synthesize.
